War Timeline
War Timeline 1997-2006

1997

June –
* Dumbledore dies

July –
* Voldemort celebrates Dumbledore's death by torturing a Muggle family in Winchester on Harry's birthday and sending him the vision of their deaths
August –
* Bill & Fleur get married

September –
* The Trio leaves to hunt down the remaining Horcruxes
* Hogwarts resumes classes with McGonagall as Headmistress; some students did not return

October –
* Slytherin's Locket (the 3rd Horcrux) is found and destroyed
* Minor skirmish between the Order & Death Eaters in Middlesburgh
* Muggle torture increases

November –
* Aurors take a more active role in the fight against Voldemort
* Another skirmish – this time in Skegness

December –
* Voldemort sends his Death Eaters on raids on Muggleborn families; many of the attacks are foiled by the Order & Aurors.
* Werewolf attacks increases, people lock themselves up at full moon

1998

January/Feburary –
* Horcrux hunting; it is determined that the missing Horcruxes are Ravenclaw's shield and Voldemort's snake Nagini
* Voldemort and the Death Eaters are suspiciously quiet – an eerie calm settles.
* New legislation preventing werewolves' movements – unfortunately this only limits those who are not already on the dark side.

March/April –
* Early March – Rodolphus escapes from Azkaban. His escape – modelled off Crouch jr's – goes unnoticed. He hides, gathers information and stays out of the war with his own plans in mind.
* Several attacks, murders and disappearances of influential Muggles and Wizards occur; a few key Muggles are murdered – panic is starting to spread as the Ministry stands useless against the Death Eaters.
* Legislation allows Aurors to use the Unforgivables
* Hufflepuff's cup is found and destroyed, leaving only 2 Horcruxes to be destroyed and only 1 to be found (Nagini, of course, is found wherever Voldemort is)

May –
* Ravenclaw's shield is found and destroyed (Nagini is the only remaining horcrux)
* There is a minor battle between DE and Aurors/Order in Stoke and a larger one in Ipswich. Romilda Vane's parents are caught in the crossfire of this battle and accidentally killed.
* Voldemort himself makes an appearance at both but is content to watch and not participate in the happenings

June –
* "Final" battle close to Hertford, the Order/Aurors distract the Death Eaters as Ron & Hermione battle Nagini and manage to kill the snake just as Harry kills Voldemort.
* Peter Pettigrew is killed by Ron in the same battle
* Bellatrix Lestrange and the rest of the Death Eaters retreat after Voldemort is defeated; for a short time it seems as if the War has ended; celebrations commence and Aurors starts looking for those not captured.
* The Death Eaters set up a base at the Lestrange family estates in Upper Slaughter, Gloucestershire. The family estates have always been unplottable, and now they have cast a very strong Fidelius charm on the village to prevent the side of Light from finding them. Muggles are driven out of their homes, which are taken over by Death Eaters.

July –
* There are many celebrations throughout the Wizarding world – no one seems to want to stop partying now that Voldemort is truly dead.
* Bellatrix and Rodolphus Lestrange takes charge of the Death Eaters.
* Azkaban is attacked. The Death Eaters caught at the end of OoTP and those caught in the "final" battle are freed and they rally to Upper Slaughter.
* Attacks on the celebrations immediately follow throughout the wizarding world and there are several deaths
* Troy Bletchley (Older brother of Miles) kills Minister Scrimgeour

August –
* The new Minister of Magic (Diggory) covers up the escape from Azkaban. There are rumours, but nothing concrete to prove it.
* He cannot cover up the attacks though, and a general feeling of uneasiness is spreading around the Wizarding world.
* Werewolf attacks are still growing, Dark Creatures such as Dementors are still out there and as attacks continue, people are more and more afraid – and aware that the war isn't over.

1999

January - March –
* The Order/Aurors realise that the war is not going to end any time soon and plans are made for a counter attack.
* Diggory tries to calm people's nerves with new forceful legislation: Magic is monitored more than before (there is too much for it all to be monitored), all Floo-traffic is monitored, shops are required to take the name of those who shop – as well as to keep a record of what they buy, owls are randomly caught and their letters inspected.
* Werewolves movements are almost completely hindered (if the werewolf is law biding), the same goes for vampires – they must report where they live, and a letter goes out to neighbours about their presence in the area. The ministry tries but fails to stop people employing werewolves.
* The Death Eaters are unaffected by all this, but sit back and let it happen, attacking minor targets to fuel the situation

April –
* The Daily Prophet hails Diggory as the best Minister of modern time and proclaims the new legislations a success.
* The general wizarding public thinks that the war is coming to an end soon, and people start to get on with their lives. Only the Order is still out there searching for the Death Eaters.

May - June –
* The Order continues searching for the Death Eaters, they are not successful.
* Random 'accidents', wolf attacks and fires in the Muggle world leaves little imprint on the magical community.
* Attack on the Quibbler kills Luna's father

August - December –
* This is a very quiet time, there are no attacks (at least that are noticed/made public), and the general public believes that the Death Eaters have lost interest, or have defeated themselves with infighting
* The Order continues to prepare themselves for the worst, but after months of finding nothing, they're starting to wonder if it's just over
* The Death Eaters are rallying under Bellatrix and Rodolphus Lestrange, and growing stronger

2000

January – March –
* The Death Eaters begin slowly insinuating their spies into influential positions at the Ministry, Gringotts, Hogsmeade and even Hogwarts
* The Death Eaters start to quietly recruit younger members, some still at Hogwarts, some having just left school

April – May –
* There are several sightings of Death Eaters near the Forbidden Forest, but nothing noticeable comes from this
* Tension is rising among the Order and Aurors from the lack of Death Eater activity.

June – August –
* Dementors are spotted near London, and Kiss several Muggles
* Diggory once again covers up the incident, as he doesn’t want wide-spread panic
* The Order and the Aurors separately investigate the Dementor Incident, but find nothing

September – October –
* These two months are the quietest of them all; there is a feeling in the air that something big is going to happen soon, and tempers among the Order & Ministry are short
* Diggory is still refusing to deal with the situation
* The Death Eaters are making their final plans to act

December –
* Diggory is killed near Christmas in a sudden attack on the Ministry
* Several other attacks are executed at the same time in different areas of the magical world, several important members of society are killed or kidnapped.
* Several Werewolf attacks around Britain create panic and chaos.
* A leak of magic goes undetected into London as the damages on the Ministry is thought to be minor and the Ministry's attentions are diverted to other attacks.
* Fudge is once again made Minister in an attempt from the Wizengamot to seem forceful.

2001

January –
* Breach of the Statute of Secrecy
* The undetected leak of magic (from December) makes mass Obliviation necessary - Fudge is blamed and loses support
* The Daily Prophet writes about "the failed Minister"

February – March –
* Attacks escalate – people demand for harder regulations and legislations
* Fudge enforces the law that says that all wizards are supposed to carry papers to their identity with them at all times.
* The Order follows a lead and finds traces of Death Eater activity in Exeter

April/May –
* The ministry starts to fall apart under Fudge’s rule
* Gawain Robards makes the decision to make the Auror Department separate from the Ministry. The Wizengamot approves, as they, under Tiberius Ogden, have their own agenda.

June –
* Fudge gets thrown out of office again, for reasons including incompetence and accepting of bribes (the latter is a lie).
* Two factions (the Isolationists and the Separatists - those who want to appeal to the Muggle world for aid) appear in a fight for who is going to replace Fudge.

July – August –
* There are several more attacks on Muggles and Wizards – legislation is proven to be useless.
* A general prohibition on Apparation is discussed but cannot be enforced without a Minister
* The Ministry is in chaos without a Minister, and departments start falling apart, leaving the Ministry in ripe position for spies to come in

September – October –
* The factions are busy fighting each other politically, and are not focused on finding the Death Eaters who reign with terror.
* Pureblooded wizards flock to the Death Eaters as they are terrified of the consequences of not joining.
* There is still no decision on a Minister, and the Ministry becomes even more unorganized

November –
* Minor skirmish in Cardiff between Order and Death Eaters, a few casualties on both sides. Aurors were not involved showing the public that they cannot be trusted.

December –
* The Death Eaters finalize their plan of action
* The Order and Aurors tries to co-ordinate in spite of Robards wanting to keep close to the Wizengamot.

2002

January –
* Hogwarts attacked - Divination tower destroyed. Hagrid, Grawp, Flitwick and several students are killed
* Terry Boot is hired by Hogwarts to put up extra security and expand the wards to Hogsmeade, including making Apparition impossible within the town limits – He stays on as the new Charms teacher
* Muggles starts talking of natural disasters and terrorist attacks as the Death Eaters become more active in their attack on the Muggle world (goes on through the rest of the war)

February – March –
* Many students are pulled from Hogwarts by their parents
* The Ministry is in an even worse organizational mess
* The Order & the Wizengamot realise they need to declare someone Minister soon, if only to give the public someone to look to.

April – May –
* There are random attacks all around Britain
* The Order and Aurors begin to pool their resources, but there is too much fighting among the factions for anything to be done successfully
* There is much debate over whom to appoint Minister
* The Death Eaters grow stronger and stronger, and seem unstoppable.

June –
* Malfalda Hopkirk is finally agreed upon as new Minister, she keeps a low profile and does very little
* There are more minor fights between Death Eaters & the Order/Aurors. By now though, the Order and Aurors have come to some sort of agreement and are working together

July – August –
* There is a bigger battle near Stratford, several Death Eaters are caught. It's a small but important victory.
* The Death Eaters gather back in Upper Slaughter, and rally for a renewed effort.

September - December –
* Random attacks on wizards and Muggles alike
* Wizards disappear without a trace – leaving people terrified.

2003

Jan – Feb –
* Bath is attacked and Victoria Frobisher, Abigail Zellar, Amycus Carrow, Macnair, and many others die.
* There is a failed attack on St Mungos

March –
* Patients moved to the Shrieking Shack on Minerva's suggestion as the protective wards fail to keep Muggles away
* Another attack, this time in Oxford, wipes out a small Wizarding section of the town. The survivors (there are very few) head to Hogsmeade, which is starting to become a refuge of sorts

May – August –
* Several Wizarding communities outside of England (Paris, Amsterdam) are attacked when asked for assistance by England (one of the few actions taken by the new Minister)
* In light of the attacks the Ministries in those countries refuse to offer help
* Travelling and import are made difficult as more and more countries block out England and England shields itself from its unhelpful neighbours. The Black Market explodes as a result.
* In July, Dennis Creevey is missing, presumed dead after engaging in a skirmish with a Death Eater. Turns out he was kidnapped by Troy Bletchley, who liked to experiment with a vein of dark magic that ran under Bletchley Manor. He tortured and infected Dennis with this magic, and over the next 18 months, turned Dennis into a tool that would maim or kill at Troy's discretion.

October –
* Diagon attacked and destroyed – panic leads to people gathering in Hogsmeade for protection.

November –
* The Ministry is attacked and completely destroyed, the wizarding community is without a leader as Hopkirk is killed.
* With the Ministry killed, most records are destroyed, artefacts, remaining records and the likes are scattered amongst past Ministry workers.
* Quidditch league disbanded

2004

January –
* Random attacks increase in number, some small, some larger. Rodolphus' and Bellatrix gather more and more followers as more and more wizarding villages are attacked and burned more or less to the ground.

February –
* Tiberius Ogden takes over as acting Ministry (putting into effect old laws of succession to claim the title) and moves the scattered remains of the Ministry to his home in Hogsmeade.

March –
* Mould-on-the-Wold is attacked, muggles and wizards alike are killed. The old Dumbledore home, to many an important symbol of resistance, is burned to the ground.
* A Muggle football match in Manchester is attacked. The Muggle media explain it as a riot, but some Muggles still claim to have seen people waiving sticks of wood with sparks coming out of them. A digital photo made by a cellphone circulate but is explained to be a hoax.

April –
* Scattered attacks all over UK leaves the Aurors stretched thin and the wizarding world frightened.

May –
* Battle of Avebury Henge - Rodolphus used Vampires and Dementors in the battle. Death Eaters win and fear spreads through the wizarding community.

June –
* Several wizarding families in Belfast are attacked by Death Eaters as their homes are blown up. The attacks are explained away as a part of the ongoing conflict between protestants and catholics.

July –
* Shoppingcentre in NewCastle blown up. Terrorists are blamed and a political crises follows for the Muggle prime minister.

August –
* An attack on the village Tinsworth, a muggle village with a large population of wizards. The wizards living there are forced to flee and the village is emptied of wizards as the survivors move to Hogsmeade or leave the country.

September –
* An attack on the Hogwarts Express is thwarted as Aurors get a wind of the plan and fly alongside the train the entire way to Hogsmeade. Several arrests are made as a result of the information.

October –
* On Halloween Godrics-Hollow suffers the same fate as Mould-on-the-Wold and Tinsworth. A failed attempt to erase any trace of the old Potter house is done in a tribute to Voldemort though the wards on the ruins protects it from complete destruction.

November –
* A second attack on Bath is performed, this one leaving the centre of town in ruins.

December –
* Weasleys (+Harry and Hermione) are gathered at the Burrow for Christmas dinner when the place is attacked – The Burrow mostly burns down and Molly is killed protecting her grandchildren.
* Dennis Creevey kills his parents on the same night as the Burrow attack, the murder going unnoticed in the light of the Weasley attack. Dennis is 'found' and returns home, with no memories of the past 18 months.

2005

January – Harry, George and Fred leaves on a mission to find the Death Eater who murdered Molly. They tell no one where they are or how long they'll be gone.

* A scouting mission goes wrong and Hermione ends up in a coma – she wakes up a week later.
* Sophia Fawcett is attacked and raped by Dennis Creevey

March –
* The Hogwarts express is attacked and destroyed while all of Hogsmeade is enjoying a day of Quidditch for the first time since the league disbanded. Several people are killed, and the calm that had settled over Hogsmeade is immediately replaced by fear.
* On the same night Millicent is assaulted and tortured by Dennis Creevey. She fights back, but is left scared of the magic she sees.
* Moody is captured, tortured and killed. His body is left in the middle of Hogsmeade for all to see as the DE gather to Ottery St Catchpole to prepare for an attack the next day.
* Finding out the Death Eaters position and attack is started by the Order/Aurors. The battle ends in a draw, but the DE has lost more than the light – this time. (Ritchie Coote and Ted Tonks killed, several severely injured, several DE caught.)
* Dennis Creevy is kidnapped from his hospital bed.

April –
* Fenrir attacks a family turning the small boy Jensen into a werewolf. The boy ends up in the care of Hestia Jones and her werewolf clinic, but Fenrir still has his eye on him.

* On the same night shops of Hogsmeade are attacked and set on fire by Miles Bletchley. Shrivenshraft burns down to the ground.

May –
* Fenrir and Rabastian attacks a muggle family at full moon, killing most but turning two children, brother and sister, into werewolves. Rabastian also kidnaps the nanny as a "fun toy" (So many warnings on this thread so seriously do NOT read unless you are prepared to be squicked).

* Miles Bletchley kills Charles Cornfoot
* Romilda runs into Rodolphus when out to dinner and catches his interest.

* Percy is made head of the Aurors after Robards death.

A few days later, after he's come to his senses, he decides Romilda is of no use to him, and kills her
* Rodolphus decides to give Adrian the task of killing Gilderoy for hearing too much. Adrian follows orders and end up putting Pansy in danger too as she catches him in the act. He starts making preparations for defecting from the DEs.
* Pureblood families who refuse to join the Death Eaters are warned by an attack on the McMillian family
* Fenrir, Rabastian, Lisa and Natasha attacks a muggle club and leave a gruesome scene behind them.
* Snape starts working (again) at clearing his name now when the Aurors have a new boss.
* The school board meets and a decision is made to introduce a new mandatory subject about wizarding and muggle traditions. The aim is to increase understanding (from Minerva's point of view)/get those pesky mudbloods to abandon their stupid muggle ways and embrace the superior wizarding traditions (Draco's point of view).

September –
* Adrian follows through on his decision to defect by rejoining the Aurors
* The Order and Aurors find out why all has been so calm - A major battle in the middle of Muggle London has been staged on the full moon. Rodolphus uses both werewolves and vampires to help fight the battle. The Aurors find themselves greatly outnumbered and the muggle victims (cameras, cctvs, mobile phones)are simply too many. Dennis Creevey is turned into a vampire.
* The battle leak into the Muggle news - exactly as Rodolphus had planned.

A fight to find a way to free him follows which finally succeeds a couple of weeks later. (Several threads following this plot line between these two)
* A broom race ends with a failed kidnapping attempt and the attack of a sea creature

2006

January –
* Rodolphus lays low while plotting an attack on the entirety of the wizarding world - a virus attack. The news that Lucius has found a way to block Muggle weapons in battle only works too well with his plans - to stage an attack on Hogsmeade while the wizarding world is too sick to defend itself.
* Bellatrix on the other hand tries to gain more information on the Aurors who nearly captured her at the lightening party.

February -
* Madam Rosmerta is killed by Dennis who tries to cover it up. An Auror investigation follows and leads to a wanted poster finally going up for Dennis who is forced to run to stay free.
* Rodolphus' plan moves forward when a modified version of the Dragon Pox virus is let lose at the Aurors' benefit ball on Valentines day.
* Scattered attacks are staged all around the UK by Rabastan, Lisa and Bellatrix as those infected by the virus become contagious. The motive - spread the Aurors thin, have them spread the disease further, and have them falling ill faster and harder from overworking. Megan Jones' family is one of the ones attacked.
* Plans are made to find a way to attack Upper Slaughter

March -
* Dragon pox is spreading rapidly in Hogsmeade and as a result the first of a series of notices starts showing up in town, blaming the Ministry for the illness that is spreading. Several die in the outbreak, including Kingsley and Cho. Minerva slips into a coma which seems irreversible and classes are cancelled at Hogwarts. Remus takes over as temporary headmaster.
